Allotment Life

I've been growing vegetables on a city allotment since 2008, and keeping ex-battery hens since April 09. Prior to this, my experiance with horticulture was restricted to killing houseplants. As much as I've learned, I'm still a novice experimenting, making mistakes, and having surprising successes. So as another year begins, I thought it'd be fun to blog and photograph life and productivity at the allotment. If you're in the UK, and want to know more about allotments including how to get one, try visiting this site: Allotment Growing and The National Society of Allotment and Lesiure Gardeners.

Ask me anything

This time last month, the greenhouse was tidy and clutter-free. What a few weeks can do!

In those few weeks though, seedlings have come along nicely. They don’t seem to mind the mess at all. Some of the tomatoes have been potted up, and I’ve given a load away to one of my work places for sale to raise funds for the animals on open day. The cauliflower have come up strong, and it looks like all the seeds have germinated, so I pricked out the excess and gave them to an allotment buddy. Also sowed and germinated are eary peas, and more sunflowers.

The onion sets have been planted out, but the seedlings are still too tender, so they’re now on the greenhouse floor, as there’s more light there than my windowsill. First carrots have been sown, broadcasted with spring onion which will be ready before there’s any vigorous growth by the carrots, so it’s a good use of the space.

Just a few new potatoes to grow, but I don’t eat many potatoes, so they’re not getting much of my time. Maincrops will go in solely as a space-filler.

It’s getting exciting out there!
